Solo-aid vs Grigri.
« on: September 23, 2019, 07:46:27 PM »
Wondering about observations those who have used the solo-aid and Grigri for rope soloing have. My rope soloing interests are mostly for aid climbing.  The facebook group has a lot of useful info but it seems a lot is toprope and free climbing.  Thanks!

The solo aid was designed prior to any spring loaded belay devices. Works like a clove hitch, though easier to feed when it gets tight as often happens without proper slack.

Thinking maybe the carabiner mod to the regular clovehitch system might be just as good?

The only way I got the Grigri to work well as an on lead solo device was with the cable support mod for chest harness.

But there are some experts out there who know more, hope they can post.

Si me permites.

Si estamos hablando de asegurar, es claro que el Grigri siempre sera la mejor opción.

Glad I came on to see what’s up. I did use the solo aid on one pitch where I basically was doing my first aid solo. Worked well when I remembered to feed it. Picked up a silent partner for a “reasonable” price so probably going to stick with that.

Gri Gri for aid soloing when you don't have to do any freeclimbing is fine. Add any freeclimbing into the mix and it becomes irritating to say the ellat unless you're willing to throw a bunch of slack out (a la the clove knot style of soloing)

With any freeclimbing, an SP or Revo are the way to go.

For solo aid you can use almost any type of system, including backup, as you always can have both hands free. I use my SP with 1 or 2 backup knots.
